Overview

StartupAfrica (SUA) is a non-profit organization whose aim is to support young adults to build business skills that foster financial independence, create jobs, and grow economies. Their current website has run into the problem of a bandwidth-consuming Wordpress plug-in and is non-responsive; they want an entire website redesign to improve mission awareness and the usability of donation and other participation pathways.

We agree upon the user engagement rate as a success metric.

Outcome

The responsive designs and component library were handed over to the developer, and areas of improvement were learned for iteration.

As with each project, I learned new lessons:

Write concise copy

Sometimes, my background as a process engineer influences my writing by being overly technical. I must remind myself to simplify word usage and use AI-powered plugins if necessary to think of other ways of expression. As my mentor told me, “explain as if you are speaking to a sixth grader.”

Communication is necessary to address unique user flows

As the business wanted to directly contact volunteers to understand their skills and availability and match them to relevant opportunities, I needed to ensure that users understood the seemingly scant form’s purpose with helper copy: “We will contact you by email within 2-3 business days to follow up with your participation request."
